Children's Art
Three’s: Gerald the Giraffe
Meet Gerald the Giraffe brought to life by our youngest Calhoun students. To create this masterpiece, the Three’s students first doodled with pastels directly onto the canvas to create a beautiful, abstract background. Then, each child constructed and decorated one of Gerald’s 37 playful spots through the process of stacking paper and drawing with pastels.
Four’s: Sticks Stacked
The Four's Sticks Stacked is a lovely display of how the creativity of each individual child can come together to create such a beautifully unified piece of art. All the Four‘s students were given the same materials including a 3/4” gold stick, assorted colors of paint, and initial stamps. The outcome is stunning!
Kindergarten: Patchwork Dogs
Dogs is a striking piece of art made by the Calhoun Kindergartners in two stages. First, the students drizzled glue on cardboard to create abstract patterns as well as representational designs. Once dry, aluminum foil was layered over top by the wonderful art committee volunteers. During the second classroom session, students were given sharpies to color in their designs. The pieces were trimmed and then assembled to form this playful scene of two dogs, which was inspired by work of an Australian Aborigine.
First Grade: Inkblot Wings
Wings displays the 1st grade students literally immersed in their art. Students were given black scratch-art paper to use as a backdrop in creating their own hand pressed inkblot artwork. While the paint dried on their “wings”, the First graders posed for individual photographs. The Children’s Art volunteers brought these components together by placing the children on the beautiful artwork they created.
Second Grade: Second Grader’s World - NYC & Calhoun
This project exhibits the 2nd Graders’ perspectives of their world. Each student drew what came to mind when thinking of NYC and Calhoun. Materials included acrylic sheets, scratch-art paper, colored paper, pastels, markers, and pens. The students’ ideas were endless! In an amazing collaboration, the 50 individual perspectives melded beautifully in this cohesive piece.
Third Grade: Cuisenaire Rod Robot
The Third graders were given the full spectrum of cuisenaire rods to form one of two different shapes, either a rectangle or a right angle. Their creativity led them to each create a unique color design. Our Children’s Art volunteers then arranged these rods to form the shape of a robot. This image will carry into Fourth grade when these students utilize Function Robots to explore number patterns and are introduced to functions and formulae.
Fourth Grade: In the future, I want ...
The Fourth graders were challenged to complete the sentence, “In the future, I want...”. The resulting declarations range from the humorous to the insightful. Armed with ideas of their future, students were allotted a section of canvas on which they wrote words and drew pictures in their own creative style. Many students also affixed sequins on the skull, which is positioned at the center. Much like a crystal skull, the sequin skull symbolizes “life”.
